Hiking and Trekking - Clothing and Equipment

Hiking Equipment recommendations

The following list is the result of years of experience from our staff in practicing the activities we offer, and we hope it helps you in packing and making any necessary purchases before departure. It is a list of clothing, equipment, and materials required to participate in our tours.
If you do not have all this equipment, please inform the guide accompanying you or our booking office so that we can find a solution together before departure, and you can simply enjoy the excursion with us!

BASIC CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT

For day trips and multi-day tours.

  • 25-30l backpack (with rain cover)
  • Waterproof hiking shoes with a good sole (best if high-heeled)
  • Lightweight down jacket
  • Long hiking pants (best if detachable)
  • Long or short tights (in case of cold and/or windy weather)
  • Windproof pile soft-shell
  • 2 t-shirts (best if rapid-dry merinos wool)
  • Long-sleeved thermal shirt (best if made of merinos wool)
  • Socks (warm or light, according to the season)
  • Scarf or neck warmer
  • Hat or bandana ("Buff" like)
  • Sunglasses
  • Warm gloves
  • Water bottle (at least 0.75l, extra bottle needed for hot weather)
  • Snacks (best if nuts, dried fruit and chocolate)
  • First Aid Kit (bandages, disinfectant, scissors, latex gloves, thermal cover)
  • Headlamp
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellant
  • Swiss army knife (not mandatory, but can be useful)
  • Carabiners and cords (useful to attach other equipment to the outside of your backpack or to replace shoe laces, if broken)
  • Waste bag
  • Napkins and/or wet wipes
  • Duct tape (useful for fixing equipment on-the-go)

IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER

Useful for single-day excursions in case of bad weather forecast, highly recommended for multi-day tours as weather can easily change.
If you're not sure of your shoes waterproof capabilities, try them on rainy days, also with waterproof spray (that can be useful during an excursion too).

  • Waterproof jacket with a hood (referred to as a "shell" or "hard-shell")
  • Waterproof overpants (those with a full-length side zip are easier to put on)
  • Waterproof gloves (we recommend merino wool liner gloves and Gore-Tex outer gloves)
  • Gaiters (even low ones, but if worn over the overpants and over the shoe, they prevent water from entering)
  • Cap with a rigid visor (useful when walking against the wind; it may get wet, but it's better than walking with your head down)
  • Waterproof backpack cover

FOR HIKES ON THE SNOW

  • Hiking poles with cap and washer
  • Light crampons
  • Gaiters
  • Snowshoes (available for rent, our guide will give them to you at the starting point)

EXTRAS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LONGER TRIPS

To optimize the backpack space and weight, we recommend to bring another set of clothes (pants, tee, underwear, socks) to wear after the shower.
You'll be able to wash the worn equipment during the day, having them ready for the next day of trekking.
You should end up with a 7-10kg backpack.

  • 35-40 liter backpack (with rain cover)
  • Extra t-shirt
  • Extra underwear
  • Extra socks
  • Extra snacks
  • Comfortable long pants for the evening (not too bulky)
  • Bags for clothing
  • Towel (microfiber is recommended)
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Sponge and soap for washing (and laundry)
  • Identification document

And, of course, basic equipment such as

  • Phone and/or camera charger
  • A book (an e-book reader allows to carry less weight)
  • Compressible backpack for short hikes around the mountain hut

FOR OVERNIGHT STAYS IN THE MOUNTAIN HUTS

  • Sleeping bag liner (mandatory, can be usually bought on-site for 3-4€)
  • Ear plugs and mask for sleeping
  • Cash for extra meals and items purchased at the hut
