How to reach the spectacular Dolomites of Piedmont

Find out how to reach Maira Valley, a true gem in the Alps of Piedmont.

Val Maira can be easily reached from Turin through Saluzzo, from Cuneo and Borgo San Dalmazzo. For those coming from France and Liguria, it can be reached crossing the Col di Tenda pass. Highways:

  • From Genova: A7 or A21
  • From Torino: A6 or A6 + SP662
  • From Milano: A7, A21, A4, A4 and A26
  • From Bologna: A1, A21, A15, A12, A1 and A14

From Milan and Turin (Milano-Torino and/or Torino-Savona highways): take the Marene, Fossano exit and follow the directions for Busca-Dronero-Valle Maira; or the Cuneo exit and follow the directions for Cuneo-Dronero-Valle Maira.
From Savona (Torino-Savona highway) take the exit for Cuneo. Follow the directions for Cuneo-Dronero-Valle Maira.

The nearest train station is Cuneo; you can take the following trains to reach it:
  • Torino - Cuneo
  • Milano - Torino - Cuneo
  • Genova - Savona - Fossano - Cuneo
  • Bologna - Torino - Cuneo
  • Cannes - Ventimiglia - Cuneo

To reach Maira Valley from Cuneo you can rely on local bus companies:
  • Ati Bus: Cuneo – Dronero - Roccabruna and Roccabruna – Dronero-Cuneo routes
  • Benese): Cuneo – Acceglio and Acceglio – Cuneo routes


Maira Valley - Alps of Italy

The nearest airports are Cuneo Levaldigi (27km from the Maira Valley), Torino Caselle (120km) and Nice Côte d’Azur (180km).

For the real outdoor addicted, the Maira Valley can be reached with two wonderful bike itineraries in the Alps of Piedmont.
From Cuneo:
Starting in the beautiful Parco Fluviale Gesso e Stura di Cuneo natural park, follow the #2 Itinerary “Via Antica di Vignolo” (medium diffculty), that leads to Ponte del Sale, in Vignolo (km 9).
Then, follow the S.P. 23 road towards Cervasca and Caraglio (17km), and the S.P. 422 (26km) to reach the town of Dronero, famous for its XV century Ponte del Diavolo (Bridge of the Devil). To reach the other small towns and hamlets of lower Val Maira from Dronero, follow the directions for Villar San Costanzo (30km) or Roccabruna (28km).
To reach the high valley follow the directions for Tetti di Dronero and then Cartignano (32km). Following the S.P. 422 you can reach the hamlets of San Damiano Macra (35km), Macra (43km), Celle di Macra (50km) in a side valley on the left, Stroppo (49km) and Elva (59km) in a side valley on the right, Marmora (55km) and Canosio (56km) in a left side valley, Prazzo (54km) and Acceglio (60km).

From Saluzzo:
From the city center take Corso Roma following the directions for Cuneo. Turn right in Corso IV Novembre and then left in Via Trieste, to reach the cycling route for Manta. Follow the route, crossing the villages of Verzuolo and Villanovetta. In the town center turn left in Via Asilo Keller and right in Via Cascine and then Via Maestri del Lavoro; then take the first on the left and right on the unpaved road near the Madonna della Neve church, to reach Costigliole Saluzzo (10km).
Cross the town and take Via Umberto I on the right, towards the hamlet of Ceretto, with the ancient San Martino church (XII-XVI century). Leaving Ceretto, the road becomes steeper up to Busca. Take Via Rossana and an unpaved road on the left side by a rivulet. Take the strada provinciale for 100mt then turn left and immediately right, and left again at the following crossroads, taking the strada provinciale to Dronero. After 50mt turn left in Via Ceresa up to a crossroads located after a short slope. Turn right at the stop signal (in the direction of San Mauro).
At the next crossroads (23km) turn left and follow the road for 2km up to the crossing with the roads for Dronero. Cross the road and cycle to the hamlet of Morra di Villar San Costanzo. Turn right after the church and continue towards Villar San Costanzo. On the strada provinciale, cycle for 2km to reach Dronero. If you want to reach Roccabruna from Dronero take Via Sarrea and then turn right and follow the directions.
If you want to reach the high valley, take Via Pasubio and reach of Tetti Dronero. Take the S.P. 422 to reach all the towns and hamlets of the high valley: San Damiano Macra, Macra, Celle di Macra. Stroppo, Elva, Marmora, Canosio, Prazzo and Acceglio.
